Lisa’s Personal Story:
Hi my name is Lisa Huening and I founded The Shifting Path as a result of my experience in helping my family members deal with life transitions due to aging and illnesses. I relate to the stress and turmoil created within families, particularly for caregivers, when a loved one is going through the transitions of aging and medical crisis.
In 2005 my Uncle had a heart attack and found himself unable to return to work, I stepped in to help him
navigate the government system for disability benefits. I was in California and he in Washington State. Even though he had several adult children he and I had a very close relationship and so I helped him as a long distance caregiver. Not only had he suffered a heart attack but he also had adult Diabetes, which had been part of his life for quite sometime. I became my Uncle’s Power of Attorney, talking to doctors, navigating the maze of short- term and long- term disability, as well as health insurance to make sure that he would be able to meet all of the requirements to eventually be on Medicare at the age of 62. My role did not stop there. I set up Lifeline as an emergency service in his home. Over time his Diabetes became worse and he had to be put on dialysis 3 days a week I again spoke to doctors as his advocate. I continued to be his advocate and power of attorney until his passing in April of 2007.
In the Fall of 2008 my father suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while at work. After three surgeries, 3 weeks in
ICU and another 4 weeks of recovery and rehabilitation in the hospital he was able to come home. He has made an incredible recovery but those two months in the hospital were a tenuous and emotional time for our family. During this time my mom and I were always there to be his advocate through developing a rapport with his doctors and the many staff members. We kept track of every step through the surgeries to rehabilitation and healthcare insurance. There were times my family faced concerns about health insurance and my father’s return to work.
My natural role that emerged during these times of family member crisis created an empowerment for myself, and my family. It has lead to my passion for helping others to navigate the complicated system of healthcare insurance, disability, Medicare, financial planning, time management, and the use of available community resources for caregiving. I can help to empower you to be a more effective caregiver while taking care of yourself.
